Midterm Exam

Post here (as comments) any questions you have about the stories we have covered. Both your classmates and I will look at these today and tomorrow and reply to questions posted.

  1. Can you give another example of colonialism in the story "Dead Men's Path"?

  2. Hi Chris,
what is the first example you had in mind? The educational system where the headmaster has adopted western values and considers them superior to his own (and he is going to be judged by a white supervisor on how well he applies them) is a good example.

  3. Dear Professor,
With the definitions you expects from us examples. I would like to know what exactly you are interested in? Would you like examples from the stories with which we worked throughout the semester or maybe more general. For example The theme of a fable is its moral. The theme of a parable is it's teaching. The theme of a piece of fiction is its view about life and how people behave, etc.

  4. Hi Katarzyna,
I included these on the board, but maybe you missed it in class. I will include the directions for part I here again:

    PART I: DEFINITIONS (30 points)
Choose three of the following terms and write a short explanation for each using an example from one short story we have read to demonstrate it. Each term is worth 10 points.

In class I said that if, for instance, I asked you to write about the term "theme," you would explain what theme is and use as an example one story we have read and explain what theme means in the case of that story. So, pretty specific and not at all general. Good luck studying!
